Bret’s short story “Republican” has won the 2008 Cohen Award from Ploughshares! The Cohen Awards honor the best poem and story published each year in the magazine.

Bret’s new anthology, Naming the World: And Other Exercises for the Creative Writer, is now available for preorders. Random House will release the book in January.
The National Book Foundation has named Bret as a winner of a new National Book Award for emerging writers. Adam Haslett, author of You’re Not A Stranger Here, selected Bret for the award.
Pages Magazine has named Bret as one of “The Next Generation of Literary Lions”. Also honored were Zadie Smith, David Mitchell, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Andrew Sean Greer.
Bret has received the 2006 Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers from Washington and Lee University.
Bret has accepted the Briggs-Copeland Professor of Fiction position at Harvard.
